What's the point in starting strong, if you're just going to finish with a squeak. Over the years, I've noticed lots of students putting in hours crafting an amazing introduction, just to end their personal statement with a bland sentence. In this video, I'll teach you my most effective strategies that'll take your conclusion from average to amazing in just 3 steps. And we'll use examples from successful Oxbridge personal statements to inspire your very own masterful conclusion.
Finally, we're at the last bit of the personal statement: the conclusion! This quite similar to the introduction and carries a lot of weight. Just as the introduction needs to make a good first impression, the conclusion needs to leave a good lasting impression.
There are 2 important elements of the conclusion. 1. Is to sum up your key qualities 2. Is to show projection and passion related medicine.
Here's an example
My experiences have made me compassionate, empathetic and also incited an ever-growing desire to care for others. I would relish the opportunity to read medicine and rise to every challenge.
Sentence 1 sums up the key qualities and sentence 2 hits it home with a passionate projection and shows how much studying medicine will mean to them. Throughout passionate words like "compassionate, relish" etc and passionate concepts like "ever-growing desire" are used.
Here's another example
Through my work experience I have realised that medicine can be a challenging job, demanding sacrifices; nevertheless once given the opportunity, I know I have the motivation and capacity to succeed in this rewarding and intellectually fulfilling vocation.
This perfectly executes the formula of summing up key qualities (motivation and capacity) and shows projection and passion by considering how "challenging and demanding" medicine can be but still arriving at the decision that it will still be "rewarding and intellectually fulfilling".
And lastly here's a short single sentence that achieves both elements of summing up key qualities and passionate projection.
Fully aware of the challenges and expectations of a medical career, I believe my strong work ethic, caring nature and enthusiasm will make me a successful, well-rounded doctor.
So to briefly summarise then, the conclusion is almost as important as the introduction, as it sets the lasting impression. Use it to sum up your key qualities then show projection and passion related to medicine.
